Dear Armstrong Parents and Guardians,

Over the next few weeks, I will be going into all Armstrong classrooms to teach students about Safety Alerts.  Safety Alerts are a tool we are using to inform students and staff of any immediate safety concern.  Teachers and staff are being trained in strategies to respond to a range of possible situations, most notably what would happen if someone unsafe attempted to enter the building.

As part of our lesson, students are taught about their job during a Safety Alert, which is:

          1. Stop and look at the teacher

          2. Listen and follow directions
          3. Be quiet

Students are learning that if they are any place other than their classroom, their job is to find the nearest safe adult.  All staff members at Armstrong School wear name badges students can use to identify them as safe adults.

If you have a chance, please review with your children their job during a Safety Alert.  You can also ask them what they might do if they were outside of the classroom, including in the bathroom, hallway, cafeteria, recess, or specials.

Last, please encourage your children to approach their teacher or myself with any questions they might have on the Safety Alert procedure.  Our goal is to have students feel comfortable, and communication is essential to making this happen.

Thank you for your help supporting this important lesson.

Sincerely,

David Starr

Bathroom Expectations

Dear Armstrong Parents and Guardians,

The start of the year is a great time to review rules and expectations at Armstrong School.  No where is this more important than in the bathroom.  During our first School Counselor classroom lesson, we are reviewing ways we can make the bathroom a safe, comfortable place for all students.  Please review these expectations with your children at home.

1. The bathroom is a private place for all students.  No one should be looking in or attempt to enter a bathroom stall being used by another student.

2. Students are expected to leave the bathroom the way they found it.  This includes placing all toilet paper in the toilet, flushing, and leaving stall doors unlocked once you are finished.

3. Students are expected to maintain personal space in the bathroom by keeping hands and bodies to self and using an indoor voice.

4. When washing hands, students are expected to try and keep water in the sink and to use only one press of soap.  This ensures that the bathroom floor does not become slippery.

Thank you for reinforcing this important information.

Sincerely,

Allergies

Dear Armstrong Parents and Guardians,

This September, I am visiting all Armstrong classes to talk about allergies.  Since many of our students have allergies, it becomes the responsibility of the entire Armstrong community to help keep those students safe.

As part of our lesson, I am taking time to explain allergies, including the causes and symptoms of an allergic reaction.  Students are learning that people can be allergic to a range of things, including pollen, insect stings, and foods like milk, eggs, and nuts, and can become very sick if they have an allergic reaction.

Here at Armstrong, we need everyone’s help to keep students with allergies safe.  There are some important things each of our students can do to.  They are:

  • Please don’t share food
  • Only eat food in the cafeteria and classroom.  Do not eat food on the bus
  • Always wash your hands after eating, especially if you have eaten nuts or nut products such as peanut butter
  • Look out for our students with allergies.  If someone looks sick or is having trouble breathing, get an adult right away

When you have a moment, please review the strategies we use to keep students with allergies safe at Armstrong with your child.  And remember, all of our classrooms are nut free.  Please do not send in any snacks containing nuts.  In the cafeteria, students are welcome to bring food containing nuts for lunch, as our students with nut allergies are able to sit at an allergy friendly table.  Students who buy lunch may also sit at this table.

Thank you for your help supporting this important lesson.

Sincerely,
